On Monday, February 9, 2009, at 2:49 p.m., units of the San Jose Fire Department responded to reports of smoke issuing from an approximately 40,000 square foot abandoned commercial structure on San Jose’s east side.
The first units on scene reported heavy smoke and fire conditions prompting an immediate call for additional resources with second and third-alarms being struck.
Firefighters, under the direction of Operations Battalion Chief, Kevin Conant, and Department Safety Officer, Juan Diaz, quickly transitioned to a defensive strategy to attack the flames using three aerial master streams off of Truck 1, Truck 2, and Truck 16 to darken down the bulk of the fire.
As the fire continued to burn, a fourth-alarm was struck for additional manpower, and a Santa Clara County overhead team was dispatched to assist with the large scale operation.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
