A kitchen fire in a third-floor apartment caused flooding in two apartments below it, a Vallejo Fire Department spokesman said Monday.
“We had reports of a fire at 750 Sereno Drive — in the Sereno Village Apartments — at about 3 p.m. Sunday,” Assistant Fire Chief Doug Robertson said. “It turned out to be a kitchen fire, and the fire sprinklers put it out, but it flooded the apartments on the second and the first floors.”
Firefighters responded to what turned out to be a false alarm at Sutter Solano Medical Center shortly before the apartment fire, so were unable to respond to the actual fire as quickly as they would have liked, Robertson said.
“Someone set off the alarm (at the hospital), so we had to send a full response, and that’s when the real fire was called in,” he said.
The city’s shrinking fire department, he said, “is just a ticking time bomb waiting to happen.”
