WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (KCBS) – A small blaze flared up Sunday night at the site of a lumber yard in Walnut Creek where a four-alarm fire burned for several hours Saturday, a Contra Costa County Fire Protection District dispatcher said.
The flare-up was reported at 10:09 p.m. at Piedmont Lumber, located at 2860 N. Main St.
On Saturday, a fire was reported at the lumber yard at 1:44 p.m. It grew into a four-alarm blaze, bringing about 70 firefighters and other personnel to the site at one point.
Interim Fire Chief John Ross said the building on the property is a complete loss. The county’s hazardous materials team also responded because hazardous materials such as paints, solvents, and petroleum materials burned in the fire, he said.
No injuries were reported in connection with the fire. Employees at the North Main Pet Lodge, located adjacent to the lumber yard, appeared to suffer from minor smoke inhalation but refused care, Ross said.
Authorities took about 20 dogs and cats out of the business and transported them to the county’s animal shelter in Martinez, he said.
The cause of Saturday’s fire remains under investigation. Fire officials today said they have not ruled out the possibility that the blaze was set intentionally.
