PHELAN • San Bernardino County firefighters responded to numerous spot fires caused by a teen leaning on a power-line guy wire, which caused the power lines to fall near Johnson and Nielsen roads around 4:20 p.m. Tuesday.
Officials received reports of a large explosion in the area right before firefighters confirmed the power lines fell on a barbed wire fence that acted as additional wires, which caused six spot fires near an abandoned chicken farm.
The teen was riding his bicycle when he stopped to urinate and was leaning on a guy wire that supports the power pole causing the power lines to become loose and fall or caused a short to the lines that caused the power lines to fall, according to Cal Fire Battalion Chief Rod Delgado.
Southern California Edison cut power to the lines, which did not affect power for nearby residents.
