ANTIOCH — Firefighters quickly extinguished a fire at Park Middle School this afternoon, officials said.
The fire started in a boys restroom and appeared to originate in a paper towel dispenser, said Marsha Brown, the school district’s associate superintendent for educational services.
The fire was reported about 12:25 p.m. at the school on Spartan Way, a Contra Costa Fire dispatcher said. Students and staff were safely evacuated from the area near the back of the school.
Firefighters left the school about an hour after the initial fire call.
Brown said the fire, which is under investigation, caused extensive damage to the walls and ceiling of the boys restroom and minor damage to the girls restroom. Smoke damage was reported in the teachers lounge.
