Parker, Arizona (La Paz County) – The Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Colorado River Indian Tribes are recognizing two individuals for saving the life of a four year old boy after a near drowning Saturday July 17, 2010.
While on a routine patrol, Engine Boss Jack Yeager and Crew Member Mike Ricci, assigned to a Type-6 Engine 5162 of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, encountered a life threatening situation. A homeowner signaled the engine crew to stop, a second homeowner appeared from behind the house carrying a small child and it was obvious that the child was unconscious. The engine crew took immediate action in performing CPR and was able to successfully revive the child.
The engine crew remained in constant communication with the Arizona Interagency Dispatch Center until the first response team arrived on scene. Because of the extensive training received by the engine crew they were able to assist and save this small child. The child was released from the La Paz Regional Hospital the following day.
We express our gratitude and thanks to the engine crew on loan to the BIA from the Mohave Valley Fire Department for their immediate actions and quick response during the life-threatening event.
This incident gives us an opportunity to remind everyone that drowning incidents occur frequently when recreating around water, especially since they happen suddenly and without warning. In most cases, there is no splash or cry. Please be vigilant in watching children when they are around water.
