Members of the Bakersfield Fire Department plunged into the Kern River Thursday morning to train for the skills needed to rescue people from the swift-moving water. Called “swiftwater rescue,” this type of operation can pose dangers to rescuers, who must follow proper techniques in order not to fall into the river themselves.

Firefighters battle 25-acre brush fire in Riverside County

Firefighters in Riverside County on Wednesday afternoon were battling a 25-acre brush fire that was burning in medium-to-heavy vegetation near Anza. At least three people in the area were treated by paramedics for minor injuries as fire crews worked in 93-degree heat, the Riverside County Fire Department said.
