BENICIA — Firefighters battled a grass fire endangering nearby structures for more than three hours Sunday afternoon. Benicia firefighters responded to a call for grass fire at about 3 p.m. that started near the on-ramp of westbound Interstate 780 at East Fifth Street, Benicia fire Capt. Lisa Dubnoff said.

City officials are planning layoffs for the fire department and in the parks and recreation department to help balance the 2011-12 budget. VISTA – Firefighters battled a fire sparked Saturday by a malfunctioning lawn mower in the backyard of a house on Olive Avenue, authorities said. Firefighters with Vista and Oceanside fire departments responded at 12:15 p.m. to a report of a brush fire at 1031 Olive Ave., said Chief Brian Gregson of the Vista Fire Department.
